December Closing and Winter Break Housing

All non-graduating residents are expected to leave campus by 10 a.m. on December 9th. Residents who need to stay on campus after 10 a.m. 12/9/21 but no later than 10 a.m. 12/15/21 due to travel schedules or involvement in university activities must submit a LATE STAY REQUEST by 5 p.m. on the last day of classes (November 29).

Residents who need to stay on campus for any portion of the Winter Break, between 12/15/2021 and 1/7/2022 must complete the WINTER BREAK HOUSING REQUEST form by 5 p.m. on the last day of classes (November 29). A $345 flat fee will be charged for housing during the break period.

NOTE:  Residents submitting a WINTER BREAK request DO NOT need to submit a LATE STAY request. 


 2021-2022 Break Housing

University Housing regularly provides options for students who are not able to fully leave campus during the intersession period between the end of the Fall semester and the start of the Spring semester.  Those residents who need to remain on campus for any length of time between December 15, 2021 and January 7, 2022 must request Winter Break Housing This includes residents who are currently residing in residence halls, Wolf Village, Wolf Ridge, and ES King Buildings D, F & G.  Residents of other buildings at ES King Village or residents of Western Manor Apartments are not required to request break housing and are exempt from additional charges for remaining during the break, unless they will not be continuing in their same location for the spring semester. 

Eligibility for Winter Break Housing

  • Students currently in housing and who will remain in University Housing facilities for the spring semester are eligible.
  • Students currently in housing and who will be enrolled in the spring semester, but do not plan to live in University Housing facilities for the spring semester are eligible. Please note that you must check out by 5 p.m. on Monday, January. 3.

Costs

  • The cost for Winter Break Housing in 2021-2022 is $345 and covers the period between the end of the fall semester and the start of the spring semester. Pre-approval for Winter Break housing and the break housing charge is required for all residents staying for the break, including residents in Wolf Ridge, Wolf Village, and the D, F & G Buildings of E.S. King Village, regardless of the length of time you stay on campus during this date range. The charge for Winter Break housing will be billed directly to the student’s account for the spring semester.

Residents remaining for Winter Break

**If you have a bicycle, University Police suggests storing it in your residence hall room or apartment during the break due to low occupancy on campus.**

If you are living in the same assignment for the spring: 

  • Your access will remain current for your building; you do not need to do anything else.

If you are moving to a different space for the spring semester: 

  • You will remain in your current space for the first several days of the break and will need to complete your move to your new space on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021 by 5pm.  Please plan to pick up your new key between 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.  You will move into your spring assignment and return the key to your current space on this date. More information will be sent to residents in this situation.

Services for residents remaining on-campus during Winter Break:

  • Service Desks will be open on a limited basis so students can continue to receive mail and packages over the break. Desks will be closed on days the university is closed.
    • December 9, 8am – 2pm
    • December 10 – 22, noon – 2pm
    • December 23 – January 2, desks are closed
    • January 3 – 6, noon – 2pm
    • January 7, desks return to normal hours, 8am – 8pm
  • University Housing RAs and professional staff will be available to provide support for residents during Winter Break.
  • NC State Dining will have limited dining operations over Winter Break. If you have any questions, contact NC State Dining through the Wolfpack One Card office at ncstatedining@ncsu.edu or by calling 919-515-3090.
  • Student Health Services will be open until Dec. 23 and will reopen the week of Jan. 2. Go to healthypack.dasa.ncsu.edu for hours and appointments.

Residents NOT remaining for Winter Break

**If you have a bicycle, University Police suggests storing it in your residence hall room or apartment during the break due to low occupancy on campus.**

If you are remaining in your current assignment for the spring:

  • You may leave belongings in your space during the Winter Break period; however, you will NOT have access to your space for the duration of this period.
  • You do not need to check-out or return your key(s) prior to leaving for the Winter Break. You will be able to return starting January 7.

If you will return to your same housing assignment for the spring semester, we ask that you do the following before leaving for the semester break.  Students returning to their same residence hall space for the spring do not need to turn in their keys.:

  • Claim a MOVE-OUT PERMIT to park near your hall during a 45-minute loading time. Between November 29 and December 15, 2021 students and family members may temporarily park in residential parking zones, adjacent to University Housing buildings or in specifically reserved move-out loading zones, with a temporary move-out loading permit. Move-out permits will become available on November 28. Please register your license plate online for a temporary loading permit using the instructions on our webpage.  Students are allowed a maximum of 45 minutes to load their vehicles in dedicated move-out loading areas.
  • Set room thermostat: depending on the unit, set the thermostat to 70°, or the middle setting/dot and set the fan speed to low.
  • Submit work orders prior to leaving. It is the resident’s responsibility to submit requests to avoid unnecessary charges.
  • Unplug all personal electronic devices and personal appliances.
  • Remove all perishable food and clean refrigerators, but leave micro-fridges plugged in.
  • Remove all trash and recycling, placing it in appropriate receptacles outside the building. No trash should be left in rooms or suite bathrooms.  
  • Take all valuables and personal items you may need over break, including but not limited to: driver’s license, passport, travel documents, medications, chargers, laptops, tablets, cell phones, favorite outfits, keys, notes, books, and any other item you think you might need while you’re away. Residents who were not pre-approved for Break Housing will not have access to their buildings during the break.
  • Remove any laundry you may have left in the building laundry room.
  • Remember to take your fish with you.
  • Return any temporary fobs or temporary room/suite keys and any checked out equipment to your community’s service desk. 
  • Pick up all packages and mail from your community service desk.
  • Make sure there is no water running (sinks, shower, etc.).
  • Shut and lock all windows and doors; lower and close blinds.
  • Turn off all room/suite/apartment lights.
  • Lock room and suite/apartment doors.

If you are living in a different on-campus room assignment for the spring:

  • You will need to plan to move to your new space BEFORE leaving for the break (if the space is available) or plan to take all your belongings home for the break.  You will not be able to move after the break, since we will need to clean your current space for a new spring resident.
  • Follow the same pre-departure check-list as Graduating and Non-returning students (found below).

If you are graduating at the end of the fall semester:

  • You may remain in your current space until 10:00 a.m. on December 15.
  • Card access will be removed at this time.
  • Complete the following check-list items before you leave for the break period:
    • Sign-up for a checkout appointment time at least 72 hours in advance of your planned departure. Failure to sign up for a check-out appointment will result in a improper check-out fee of $50. 
    • Make sure you have removed all personal items from your room/suite/apartment
    • Pick up all packages and mail from the service desk
    • Remove all trash and recycling and clean out your fridge, placing all debris in appropriate receptacles outside the residence hall/apartment. Make sure your room has been swept clean.
    • Close and lock all windows, turn off all lights, close and lock all doors, and leave your micro-fridge plugged in (if applicable).
    • Return any checked out equipment to your community’s service desk
    • Meet with an RA (or other hall staff member) for your pre-scheduled check-out appointment and room check, and return your key(s). 
    • Claim a MOVE-OUT PERMIT to park near your hall during a 45-minute loading time. Between November 29 and December 15, 2021 students and family members may temporarily park in residential parking zones, adjacent to University Housing buildings or in specifically reserved move-out loading zones, with a temporary move-out loading permit. Move-out permits will become available on November 28. Please register your license plate online for a temporary loading permit using the instructions on our webpage.  Students are allowed a maximum of 45 minutes to load their vehicles in dedicated move-out loading areas.

If you are NOT returning to NC State for the spring (non graduating):

  • Students who will not be enrolled and registered for spring classes are not eligible for Winter Break Housing. All residents not remaining on campus for the break must check out by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December. 9.
  • Card access will be removed at this time.
  • Complete the following check-list items before you leave for the break period:
