NC State resident students with a room assignment can cancel their housing agreement/assignment at any time, understanding that there are associated fees for cancelling.
First-Year Students
The cancellation policy does not apply to first-year student housing assignments prior to the first day of class because of the First-Year Live-On Requirement. If first-year students do not wish to live on campus, they must complete a first-year live-on requirement appeal. If the appeal is granted prior to the start of the semester, a cancellation penalty will not be assessed. If first-year students cancel their housing assignment due to a live-on appeal AFTER the first day of classes, a prorated charge will be applied, and the cancellation fee schedule below will be in place.
Room Selection Period
Fall Room Selection is generally held in early spring (February-March), where participating students have an opportunity to select their room assignments for the following academic year. Students who select housing during this period, whether through a manual or online housing process, or as part of a roommate group during an online room selection process, have 24- hours from the time of the selection or acceptance of housing to cancel their housing assignment without penalty. Canceling a housing application during any part of the Room Selection Process removes the student from the Room Selection Process for that year.
Cancellation Process
The Cancellation Request can be found via the Housing Portal linked in the navigation bar. It can also be located via the MyPack Portal when you are cancelling your courses. Follow the steps below.
- Access MyPack Portal
- Select “Campus Living”
- Log into the “Housing Student Self Service” portal and follow the link to access your application
- Select “Forms”
- Complete the Cancellation Request
- Hit Submit

The above rates and deadlines are for students assigned to a room for a full academic year. If canceling after the start of the housing term, students will also be charged a prorated amount until they officially check out of housing and return their keys. Check-outs must be completed no later than 48 hours after submitting a cancellation request.
