Mail/Packages
Residents in University Housing communities are able to receive mail and package deliveries.
Delivery Methods
Mail and packages are delivered to residents one of three ways:
- U.S. Postal Service (USPS) delivers directly to NC State Mail Services (Monday through Friday*).
- USPS mail and packages are NOT delivered to NC State Mail Services on weekends or holidays.
- At the NC State Mail Services Center, University Housing sorts and then delivers USPS mail and packages to the apartments and residence hall service desks once a day, Monday through Friday.
- Once received at the apartment or residence hall service desks, staff enter the package into the tracking and notification system. Once entered, the resident receives an automatic email notification to pick it up during service desk business hours.
- Shipping Carriers (FedEx, UPS, Amazon, etc.) deliver directly to the residence hall or apartment service desk seven days a week.
- This method skips the NC State Mail Services Center.
- Once received at the apartment or residence hall service desk, staff enter the package into the tracking and notification system. Once entered, the resident receives an automatic email notification to pick it up during service desk business hours.
- U.S. Postal Service (USPS) delivers directly to the apartments (Wolf Village, Wolf Ridge, ES King/Western Manor) seven days a week.
- This method skips the NC State Mail Services Center.
- The apartment service desk staff enter the package into the tracking and notification system.
- Once entered, the resident receives an automatic email notification to pick it up during service desk business hours.
Note: Service Desks do not accept deliveries by pizza vendors, Instacart, DoorDash, UberEats, GrubHub or any such delivery services. Residents will need to meet their deliveries at the building front door.
How should a package be sent to a resident?
Determine the timeliness of the package, then select the best carrier for your needs. For example, an overnight delivery through the USPS will reach the NC State Mail Services Center overnight Monday through Friday — but it may not necessarily make it to the resident, as mail and packages are delivered by NC State Mail Services to the residence halls/apartments Monday through Friday only. You can expect that mail or packages may take one or two extra business days before they are available for pick-up.
Mail and Package Delivery Tips
- We receive a very high volume of packages on a daily basis. USPS mail and packages are processed on the day they arrive on campus, Monday through Friday.
- Packages delivered directly to the apartments and residence halls by the shipping carrier are processed when received, seven days a week. At the beginning and end of each semester, processing times may be longer due to high volume.
- Check your NC State email address (unity@ncsu.edu) regularly. University Housing will send you an email notification when a package is ready to pick up.
- Please be aware that if the shipping carrier lists the shipping status as “delivered,” it does not mean it has reached the final destination (residence hall or university apartment), it means the package has reached campus.
- Residents will receive an automated email from University Housing when the package has reached the final destination. Residents, please wait until you have received the email notification from University Housing to pick up your package.
Proper Formatting of Mailing Addresses
Addressing Mail and Packages
When addressing mail and packages to a University Housing resident, make sure to include the resident’s full name, the service desk’s complete street mailing address (note the service desk is not always in the resident’s building), the resident’s room/apartment number and their building’s name.
Mail and packages received with missing or incorrect information (for example, no name) will be subject to delivery delays or will be returned to the sender.

Mail and Packages FAQs
See below for some of the most commonly asked questions about resident mail and packages.
Can mail and packages be sent to the resident’s campus address before they move in?
No. Plan to send mail and packages after the resident moves in. Please do not send mail or packages to residents before they arrive, since the service desks do not open until move-in.
When should I expect mail to be delivered?
University Housing residents can expect mail delivery by 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Mail and packages are delivered to each service desk. Residents will receive an automatic email when they have mail to pick up.
- The USPS and NC State Mail Services Center do not deliver on weekends or federal holidays. Delivery time may vary during break periods and the beginning and end of each semester due to increased volume.
Where do I pick up my packages?
Packages may be picked up at the resident’s residence hall or apartment service desk once the resident receives an email from housing that they have a package to pick up.
Can I send outgoing packages and mail?
Outgoing mail with prepaid postage can be sent via the service desk.
I received a delivery notification from Amazon/UPS/FedEx. Does that mean I can pick up my package?
No. Please be aware that if the shipping carrier lists the shipping status as “delivered,” it does not mean it has reached the final destination (the residence hall or university apartment), it means it has reached campus. Residents will receive an email from University Housing when the package has reached the final destination. Residents, please wait until you have received the University Housing email notification to pick up your package.
What do I need to pick up a package?
Your ID card.
Can I give my roommate, my friend or family member my ID Card to pick up a package for me?
No. Packages will not be released to roommates, friends, family, etc. Only the resident may pick up their own package.
Can I ship a large package (for example, a futon) to a resident?
Yes. However, the resident is responsible for transporting it from the service desk to their room.
What do I do if I receive mail in my mailbox addressed to someone else?
If you receive mail in your mailbox addressed to someone else (not your roommate or yourself), you are required to take it to the service desk. It is illegal to keep, open or discard mail that is not addressed to you.
Will mail and packages be forwarded by University Housing after a resident moves out?
No. To ensure mail and package chain of custody, mail and packages are not forwarded by University Housing. First-class mail and packages that are delivered to University Housing are returned to the sender. First-class mail does not include magazines, newspapers, etc. However, mail and packages can be forwarded through USPS if the resident sets it up. Residents can arrange mail forwarding directly through the USPS at https://www.usps.com/manage/forward.htm
To ensure all important mail is forwarded to you, you should directly notify any organizations, companies or people who will be sending you mail of your new address four to five weeks prior to the end of the semester.
Where on campus may I purchase stamps?
Wolfpack Outfitters, with two locations in either Talley Student Union or at Wolf Ridge.
Can I receive perishable packages?
Residents can receive mailed perishable packages; however, NC State Mail Service and University Housing are not able to refrigerate packages and are not liable for spoiling. Don’t order or send items that will spoil. And make sure to pick up your packages as soon as possible when you get the email notification from University Housing. Service Desks do not accept deliveries by pizza vendors, Instacart, DoorDash, UberEats, GrubHub or any such delivery services.
How long do I have to pick up my package at the service desk?
Residents have two weeks to pick up their packages. They are sent a total of three email pick-up notices. Any package not picked up within two weeks is returned to the sender.
What name do my packages need to be addressed to?
Mail and packages should be addressed to the resident’s official name on file with the university. If the resident uses a preferred name, a name other than their official recorded name, the resident must update their MyPack account with their preferred name. Mail or packages sent with fictitious names, joke names, nicknames or no names will be returned to the sender.
What are some tips to ensure quick mail and package delivery?

- List the resident’s official name on file with the university or the preferred name listed in MyPack Portal on the package Cash should not be sent or received in mail or packages
- Packages should be tracked and insured
- If you mail or receive something important, request a tracking number, delivery confirmation or send it via express or insured mail. Prohibited items will be returned to the sender (for example, alcohol, weapons, etc.)
