Graduate Student Positions

University Housing offers graduate assistantships to provide practical experiences to apply what you are learning in the classroom to the work you do in our department.

Graduate Assistantship Opportunities

University Housing employs graduate assistants to support the NC State residential experience. Our graduate assistants lead residential communities, create high-impact learning experiences with living and learning villages, advise University Housing-associated student groups, and support significant department initiatives (including training, recruitment, selection, and residential education). With over 10,000 residents, our graduate assistants are critical in cultivating an impactful NC State experience for residents. 

We offer four types of graduate assistant positions and employ over 20 graduate assistants throughout the department. To be considered for one of our graduate assistantships, you must apply and be admitted to the Graduate School

We accept applications from graduate students admitted to any graduate program at NC State. Additionally, we collaborate with the Higher Education Administration and the Counselor Education – College Counseling graduate programs.

The graduate assistant works with a residence life coordinator to provide oversight, support, and development to a residential community. In this role, the graduate assistant co-supervises resident advisors, advises a residential council, and positively shapes life on campus by supporting residents and creating engaging experiences to promote a sense of belonging. This position must live on campus in a provided and assigned apartment.

Compensation: The graduate assistant for residence life receives a stipend, health insurance reimbursement, dining dollars, access to technology, housing, and a tuition waiver at the North Carolina resident rate (in-state). Specific compensation is outlined in the position description

 The graduate assistant supports developing, implementing, and evaluating University Housing’s Residential Education Model (REM). In this role, the graduate assistant works closely with a team responsible for facilitating the recruitment, selection, and training of student staff while also supporting residential leadership initiatives. This position also works independently and in small groups with significant responsibilities associated with data management, leading others to accomplish department goals, and assisting with projects to maximize the department’s effectiveness.

The graduate assistant works with a coordinator to co-advise, support, and facilitate leadership development initiatives for the Inter-Residence Council (IRC). As a co-advisor, the graduate assistant will develop leadership training initiatives for the IRC executive board and NC State’s residential council. This position will support residential leadership initiatives, including student-led programming, activities, events, and department-wide training initiatives.

Compensation: The graduate assistant for residential learning receives a stipend, health insurance reimbursement, dining dollars, and a tuition waiver at the North Carolina resident rate (in-state). Specific compensation is outlined in the position description.

The graduate assistant works with a program/village director to provide oversight, support, and development of a living and learning village. This position co-supervises village mentors, completes administrative tasks associated with living and learning operations, and assists in creating and facilitating programmatic initiatives.

How to Apply and Timeline

To apply for a graduate assistant position for the 2024-2025 academic year, candidates must: 

  • Apply to the NC State Graduate School by their academic program’s published deadline
  • Complete the University Housing graduate assistant application.
    • Application instructions for individuals with an active NC State Unity ID and Password:
      • Step One: Access eRezLife using your NC State Unity ID and Password, following NC State’s required 2-factor authentication process. 
      • Step Two: Search the job positions. Locate and select the Graduate Assistant – Academic Year (2024-2025) position. Complete the new applicant application. 
      • Step Three: Participate in a Zoom interview once contacted by University Housing. 
    • Application instructions for individuals without an active NC State Unity ID and Password:
      • Step One: Send an interest email to Bryan C. Botts at bcbotts@ncsu.edu with your name, email address, and the position(s) you are applying for within University Housing. After receiving your email, you will receive individual instructions to access eRezLife and submit your application materials. 
      • Step Two: Create your eRezLife account with your user instructions. 
      • Step Three: Search the job positions. Locate and select the Graduate Assistant – Academic Year (2024-2025) position. Complete the new applicant application. 
      • Step Four: Participate in a Zoom interview once contacted by University Housing. 
  • Participate in an interview via Zoom if invited to interview between Monday, January 22, 2024 through Tuesday, February 20, 2024.
